Orange County Library System’s South Creek Branch connects nature and people through gardening. This new community hub invites customers of all ages to learn the benefits of sustainability and self-sufficiency by attending informational programs, gardening events and storytimes — just in time for Earth Month and Earth Day!
Where you water grows, and by providing an accessible space for individuals to learn and connect with their natural world we foster lifelong environmental enthusiasts.
The library’s community garden encourages customers to hone their green thumbs by learning about native flora and pollinator life cycles. During a “Let’s Plant a Butterfly Garden” program, customers discovered the secret to cultivating a successful butterfly garden by planting both nectar-rich flowers, like lantana, to attract passersby butterflies, as well as larval host plants like milkweed that are necessary for caterpillars to grow.
Through this type of urban agriculture, we spark curiosity and respect for the world around us and create social ties that build a greater feeling of community.
