Second Saturday: Dickens's Christmas, from Childhood to the Stage

Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Orlando Public Library

Patrick C. Fleming, Professor at Rollins College, will discuss how Charles Dickens's childhood reading influenced his novels, especially A Christmas Carol. Fleming will show how our own response to A Christmas Carol is shaped by previous our encounters with the story, especially seeing the novel on stage. Theatrical adaptations of Dickens's works affected how his first readers understood the novels, and had a strong effect on the film industry in the early twentieth century -- the years leading up to MGM's 1938 version. #dickens
