Crafting the Character Arc

Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Alafaya Branch

Many writers think that, just because they have their basic structure in place, their stories are destined to succeed. The problem with many narratives can often come in those places between the plot points. Ensuring that the story is moving forward in every scene often comes in the shape of the character arc. In this workshop, Jennie Jarvis, author of Crafting the Character Arc: A Practical Guide to Character Creation and Development, will give writers a tangible guide for creating a goal-driven story that never drags its feet! #writers

Infusing the Afterlife Into Your Fiction

Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Alafaya Branch

We've all heard campfire stories designed to provide a collective shiver; we've all heard traditional ideas of heaven and hell. But how can we use these concepts in our fiction in ways that enhance our writing? In this workshop, author Heather Startup will examine several novels and one short story, searching for commonalities among their portrayals of the afterlife as well as the unique aspects of each story. Heather will discuss e techniques to strengthen characters, the narrator's reliability, and your story as a whole. Stories for discussion: "Louise's Ghost," by Kelly Link; The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver; The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien; and The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James #writers
