The Cooking Club: Salads

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at West Oaks Branch

The West Oaks Library is starting a new club. It's a cookbook cooking club. If you love browsing through cookbooks, reading recipes or even trying out new and different dishes, this cooking club is for you! Here's how it will work. Visit the West Oaks Library Branch and check out a cookbook from our display, select a recipe and register for the program. On Tuesday, June 16 at 6 p.m. we'll meet, dine and discuss our recipe. Our first dish will be on Salads. We will provide a brief history moment on the selected dish. History Moment - Salad: The Romans and ancient Greeks ate mixed greens with dressing. In his 1699 book, Acetaria: A Discourse on Sallets, John Evelyn encouraged eating fresh salad greens and Mary, Queen of Scots, ate boiled celery root over greens covered with creamy mustard dressing, truffles, chervil, and slices of hard-boiled eggs. Salad is a dish consisting of small pieces of food, which may be mixed with a sauce or salad dressing. Salads can include a variety of foods such as vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, and grains. Garden salads use a base of leafy greens; they are common enough that the word salad alone often refers specifically to garden salads. Other types include bean salad, tuna salad, fattoush, Greek salad, and somen salad.
