Scholarship funds available through Friends of the Library
Orange County graduating high school seniors are invited to apply for a scholarship funded by the Friends of the Orange County Library System. The Ray Frenier Memorial Scholarship provides three scholarships each year: one for $1,000; one for $750; and one for $500.
To be eligible to apply, a student must:
• Complete over the school year a minimum of 75 hours volunteering in the Bookstore, Gifts & Greetings, as a Teen Library Corps member, or at a branch library.
• Complete an essay of at least 250 words about the library and the experience of volunteering.
• Provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, coach or other positive adult role model.
• Have a valid library card in good standing.
An online application and instructions for applying can be found here. Information on becoming a volunteer can be found on our Volunteer page.
The initial application must be received by February 1, 2009. Essays and letters of recommendation must be received by March 15, 2009.
Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee and three top entries will be selected. Winners will be notified by April 15, 2009. Scholarship recipients and their parents will receive an invitation to attend the annual Friends of the Library Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in May where they will be publicly recognized as a scholarship winner.
Proof of acceptance to a university, community college or technical school is required to receive scholarship funds. The funds will be dispersed directly to their school of choice.
