Meeting Notes for 2010

 

December 2010

I. Business:

CSLP Teen Video:

The Collaborative Summer Library Program, which is a nationwide summer reading collaboration among libraries, is sponsoring a teen video contest using the 2011 theme of “You Are Here.”

Teens collected ideas and formulated a loose script for the video. Megan was assigned to prepare a story board and  Megan was assigned to prepare a story board and everyone was asked to collect costume pieces to represent characters from books.

II. Upcoming Events:

Upcoming events and contests were discussed and all members were encouraged to attend programs and participate in contests.

Next meeting is scheduled for January 27, 6 p.m. in Club Central

 

November 2010

I. Business:

Volunteer Bash - December 22, 3:30 p.m.

• “How to Train Your Volunteer” was chosen as the slogan for the event to go along with the Medieval theme.
• We will play Human Bingo for our icebreaker.
• Teens will participate in a Medieval Quest fashioned after “The Amazing Race.” Each team will check in at five stations, complete a task at each, then receive a clue for the next station.
• Upon completing their quest, each team will be invited to participate in the King’s Feast (refreshments).
• An Award Banquet will follow where volunteer awards will be given.
• The event will end with dancing at the Grand Ball.

CSLP Teen Video:

The Collaborative Summer Library Program, which is a nationwide summer reading collaboration among libraries is sponsoring a teen video contest using the 2011 theme of “You Are Here.” Teen voices will be creating an entry and we have decided to use the concept of a mall directory – You Are Here and expanding it to real life. You are here now as a teen, where are you going?

Script writing will begin at the December meeting.

October 28, 2010

I. Icebreaker: Two True and One False

Each person took a turn revealing two true statements about themselves and one false statement. The rest of the group then had to guess which statement was false.

II. Business:

2010-2011 Officers - The following officers were elected to serve until September 2011. President - Mehdi Maichouf; Vice President - Megan Henson; Secretary - Estella Gong; Historian - Isabella Gong.

Volunteer Bash - Teens discussed activities for the Annual Teen Volunteer Bash scheduled for December 22, 3:30 p.m.

Teen Book Display - Teens selected books they have read and wrote a small blurb about the book on a bookmark for the November display.

III. Upcoming Events:

Upcoming events and contests were discussed and all members were encouraged to attend programs and participate in contests.

Next meeting is scheduled for November 11, 6 p.m. in Club Central.

 

September 23, 2010

I. Icebreaker: Green Glass Door

II. Business:

Volunteer Bash - Teens discussed planning for the annual teen volunteer bash. This year's bash will be held on December 22, 3:30 p.m. and all teens are invited. Our TLC volunteers will be honored at this event. It was suggested that we use a Medieval theme with relays and improv style games, and popcorn for refreshments. 

CSLP Video: The Collaborative Summer Library Program is sponsoring a teen video competition using next year's slogan, "You are Here".  We discussed the possibility of participating and everyone agreed that they would like to participate. Final entries are due in march 2011. We are expecting more information soon regarding the competition.

2010-2011 Officers - We will be selecting officers for the 2010-2011 term at our October meeting.

III. Upcoming Events:

Upcoming events and contests were discussed and all members were encouraged to attend programs and participate in contests.

August 26, 2010

I. Business:
Teens discussed ideas for promoting teen services and made some suggestions for teen programs, events, and contests:

Teen Art Contest - The Library sponsors a teen art contest in the spring and plans are in place to sponsor that contest again in 2011.

Poetry Contest - The Library currently sponsors a teen poetry contest also in the spring with an open mic night.

Film Festival and Contest - The Library has sponsored a teen video contest in the past but there was not enough participation and interest to continue offering this contest.

II. Upcoming Events:
Upcoming events were discussed. All members were encouraged to attend programs.

• September 15, 3:30 p.m. A.R.T.: Didgeridoo

July 22, 2010

I. Business:
Teens discussed ideas for recruiting new Teen Voices members to replace members who have recently graduated.

Members were asked to come up with ideas for promoting teen services and programs using the display case in Club Central. Ideas will be shared at the August meeting.

A photo shoot is scheduled for all Teen Voices, pARTz, and TLC volunteers wishing to have their pictures taken for promotional and teen marketing materials. Meet in the Children's Workroom on August 4th at 11 a.m.

II. Upcoming Events:

Upcoming events and contests were discussed. All members were encouraged to attend programs and take part in the contests.

Ideas were gathered for the upcoming End of Summer Beach Blast. Some ideas were:

  • Play Rockband on the stage using the big screen
  • Music and dancing
  • Beachball Volleyball
  • Food
  • Have Fun!!

Next meeting is scheduled for August 26, 6 p.m. in Club Central.

 

June 24, 2010

I. Business:
Teens discussed upcoming program ideas and summer volunteer opportunities.

II. Upcoming Events:
Upcoming teen events were discussed and Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend and participate in the programs.

Next meeting is scheduled for July 22, 6 p.m.

 

May 27, 2010

I. Business:
Promotional video has been completed. Teens worked together to create a slide show using Garage Band and iMovie for a 5 minute video promoting teen programs, services, summer reading, and Camp Savvy. Final copy was played at the meeting. The video will play continuously in Club Central through June 12th. Copies have been mailed to Middle and High schools in Orange County with instructions to play the video either during morning/afternoon announcements or in the Media Center. The video, titled, 10 Reasons to Spend Your Summer at the Library, can be viewed on YouTube.

Summer activities for TLC members were discussed. Some ideas included creating an online teen ezine, recording video book trailers, and acting out a children's book to be performed at the End of Summer Splash Bash.

II. Upcoming Events:
Upcoming teen events were discussed and Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend and participate in the programs.

April 22, 2010

I. Business:
Teens completed design layout for Summer Reading and Teen Services promotion video. Members chose photos and order of layout. Video to be completed using the Mac Lab for release to all High Schools before summer break.

II. Upcoming Events:
Upcoming teen events were discussed and Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend and participate in the programs.

Next meeting is scheduled for May 27, 6 p.m.

 

March 25, 2010

February 25, 2010

I. Icebreaker:                                                                                            "Act and React" presented by President, Douglas Rintoul.

II. Business:                                                                            Discussed ways to increase attendance at Teen Voices and other teen clubs and programs. Some ideas the teens were interested in are:

  • Design new publicity for teen services with current photos and fresh blurbs.
  • Shoot video promoting the library and teen programs and get schools to play on morning announcements.
  • Teens to record regular podcasts.
  • Teens to write book reviews, record booktalks, etc. to be published online encouraging teens to get involved at the library.
  • Write and perform a skit about reading to be performed during summer reading program for kids.
  • Publish a periodical Teen Zine online in a format that can be printed out as a newsletter which will include teen book reviews, original works of art, graphics design, short stories, and poetry.
  • Increase number of meetings per month in addition to our regular meeting which is the fourth Thursday at 6 p.m. It was suggested that we could have impromptu meetings and have teens work on projects when they are in the library to volunteer increasing the number of teens that we are involving in advisory activities.

These are suggestions and staff will review to see if any of these can be implemented at this time.

January 28, 2010

 

I. Summer Reading Bash:                                                                         We discussed themes for the end of summer bash.

II. Goals:                                                                                     We agreed upon the following goals for Teen Voices to accomplish during the 2010 year:

  • Increase attendance by at least 200% by September, 2010.
  • Assist in planning and promoting Summer Reading Bash.
  • Plan and promote two (2) teen programs by October 31, 2010.         
  • Write and record one (1) teen podcast promoting teen programs by   October 31, 2010.
  • Particiapte with pARTz to film summer reading promotional video.
                                                         

III. Upcoming Events:                                                             Upcoming teen events were discussed and Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend and participate in the programs.

IV. Upcoming Contests: 

  • March - Teen Art Contest
  • April - Teen Poetry Contest
