                        Meeting Notes for 2009 

December 10, 2009

Teen Annual Bash -- A great time was had by all!!

November 12, 2009

I. Icebreaker:

President, Douglas Rintoul presented an icebreaker where everyone had to write down their reason for being a part of Teen Voices.

II. Animanga Mini-Con:

Our Annual Animanga Mini-Con will take place Thursday, November 19, 6 p.m. Last day for entries is Monday, November 16, 2009. Everyone was encouraged to attend the mini-con and enter the character/comic contest.

III. Teen Annual Bash:

The Teen Annual Bash will be held on Thursday, December 10, 6.p.m. Teen Voices selected a circus theme with awards to be given to volunteers based on different aspects of the circus.

IV. Middle School Reading List:

Periodically, children's staff creates a recommended reading list for Middle School. Teen Voices was asked to participate in the design of the list and flyer. Teens were asked to select a theme and categories that go along with the theme for listing books by genre. The following suggestions were given: Journal style, 21st Century - New Millennium, and Yearbook.

V. Upcoming Events:

Upcoming teen events were discussed and Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend and participate in the programs.

Our next meeting is scheduled for December 10, 6 p.m.

Due to the holiday season, December's meeting has been moved to December 10, 6 p.m. This is also our Teen Annual Bash. Hope to see everyone there!

 

October 22, 2009

I. Icebreaker:

President, Douglas Rintoul led us in creating an acronym using TEEN VOICES.

II. Meeting Date  Changes

Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, our November meeting will be held on Thursday, November 12, 6 p.m.

Likewise, the December meeting has been moved to December 10, 6 p.m. The normal schedule will resume in January with meetings taking place on the 4th Thursday of each month.

III. Teen Volunteer Bash

The 2009 Teen Volunteer Bash will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2009. This will also be our November meeting of Teen Voices.

IV. Calendar and Contests

Reviewed calendar of upcoming events and contests.

Next meeting is scheduled for November 12, 6 p.m.

 

 

September 22, 2009

I. Date and Time Change for Teen Voices Meetings

Beginning with our October meeting, Teen Voices will meet on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. Library hours are changing and the Library will be closing at 8 p.m. Thursdays were chosen as all of our other Teen Clubs meet on Thursdays. Because of Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Teen Voices meeting have been moved to the second Thursday for November and December. Please take note of the next meeting dates:

Thursday, October 22, 6 p.m.

Thursday, November 12, 6 p.m. (also Teen Annual Bash)

Thursday, December 10, 6 p.m.

II. Election of Officer for 2009-2010 Term

Nomination and election of Officers was held for the 2009-2010 term. Officers will serve from October 2009 through September 2010. Congratulations to all Officers and thank you for accepting the challenge.

III. Teen Read Week

We will be celebrating Teen Read Week all month long during the month of October. Check our Schedule of Events for teen programming.

IV. Contests

The Library is currently promoting two contests in connection with the Dew Tour; Check it Out! and Design a Skate-Deck. All teens were encouraged to participate and promote the event.

V. Calendar

Reviewed upcoming teen events and encouraged teens to attend and promote these events.

Next meeting is scheduled for October 22, 6 p.m.

 

 

August 25, 2009

I.  Ice Breaker

President Douglas Rintoul presented a literary crossword puzzle which all members participated in solving.

II. Election of New Officers

Elections will be held at our September meeting for the positions of President, Vice President, and Secretary. New officers will serve a one year term beginning October 2009.

III. New Meeting Date and Time

Beginning in October, the library will be closing at 8 pm. M-TH. The meeting time for Teen Voices will be changed to 6 pm., beginning with the October meeting. We will also begin meeting on the fourth Thursday beginning in October so that all teen clubs will meet on the same night of the week.

IV. Teen Read Week - October 4-10

Teens compiled a suggested reading list to be posted on our web site during the month of October to celebrate Teen Read Week.

V. Morbid Teen Mayhem

We discussed ideas for a program on October 28, 2009. Teens decided to go with a Halloween party theme. Teens can come in costume if desired. We will play several teen party-style team games and watch the headless Horseman.

VI. Dew Tour Contests

Discussed library contest being promoted during September which include the Dew Tour: Check It Out contest and the Dew Tour: Design a Skate deck contest. Everyone was encouraged to participate.

VII. Upcoming Events

Discussed the calendar and upcoming teen events.

Next meeting is scheduled for September 22, 7 pm.

June 23, 2009

I. Ice Breaker:
React and Act presented by Douglas Rintoul, President.
Each teen voices member was asked to select a slip of paper which has an event listed. The teen then had to react to the event and then act it out for the other members to guess the event.

II. Summer Teen Program – Super Sentai:
Reviewed final details for Super Sentai Celebration.

III. IT Teen Voices Web Page:
Reviewed the Teen Voices page on the OCLS Informed Teens Web site. Teens revised the club description, updated their favorite cd list, and took new pictures for the site. The web page will be updated in the near future with these changes.

IV. New Officers:
Discussed electing new officers in September. Teens are to start thinking about if they are interested in being an officer. We will make a list of all those interested at the August meeting. Officers will be elected for President, Vice President, and Secretary. Election will take place at the September meeting. Term of office will be for one year from October 2009 – September 2010.

V. Calendar:
Calendar was reviewed and events promoted. All Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend as many teen events as possible.

Next meeting is scheduled for July 28, 7 p.m.

 


May 26, 2009

I. Ice Breaker:
Icebreaker (Zip Zap Zop) was presented by President, Douglas Rintoul.

II. Summer Teen Program – Super Sentai

Outline was finalized and teens provided details for games and activities for the program. Super Sentai is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, 3 p.m. Teens approved crafts for the program and made a list of materials needed.

III. Summer Do’s and Don’ts
Teen Voices members created a list of Summer Do’s and Don’ts which will be posted soon to our Informed Teens web page.

IV. Promoting Upcoming Programs
We discussed upcoming events: Jam On It – Summer Reading Program and Battle of the Bands. Teen Voices members were encouraged to attend as many programs as possible and to invite friends to programs.

V. Future Program Ideas
Teens suggested a Trekky Party as a future program based on the Star Trek series and movies.

Next meeting is scheduled for June 23, 7 p.m.


April 28, 2009

I. Ice Breaker:
Icebreaker was presented by President, Douglas Rintoul.

II. Summer Teen Program – Super Sentai – Power Rangers

Teens completed an outline for the teen program. Each year Teen Voices members create a teen program to be presented in August. This year, the program is scheduled for August 19 at 3 p.m. and will be called “Super Sentai”. The teens have written a great script that celebrates Super Sentai and Power Rangers with fun games, activities and challenges.

III. Summer Do’s and Don’ts
Teen Voices members have been given the assignment to come up with a list of summer do’s and don’ts to be posted to the OCLS Informed Teen website.

IV. Promoting Upcoming Programs
Teen Voices members were given the assignment to attend and help promote two upcoming events; Java Lounge, and Battle of the Bands.

Next meeting is scheduled for May 26, 7 p.m.

 

March 24, 2009

 

I. Ice Breaker:
Icebreaker was presented by President, Douglas Rintoul. Everyone had to pick a topic from a list and state their opinion about that topic. Some topics included; the worst type of pollution, the greatest invention, and the best job in the world.

II. Summer Teen Program – Super Sentai – Power Rangers
• Miles is going to see if he can gather some video clips and also compile a history of Power Rangers
• Ice Breaker – Introduce yourself and create a Power Ranger name and “move”.
• Everyone would come dressed as their favorite Power Ranger or wearing the colors of their favorite Power Ranger
• Obstacle Course – have a list of approved “library appropriate” obstacles for the teens to pick from at next meeting
• Craft Suggestions:
• Hen shin Armband– TLC members will scout through the supply room to look for craft materials that can be used for the armbands
• Power Ranger Mask
• Clay Sculpture Villains
• Power Rangers Video (available at OCLS)
• Scavenger Hunt – scrolls will be hidden in Club Central. They will find the scrolls which will contain clues. Teens will use the clues to find books which contain more clues to find the final “prize”.

III. Choose Your Own Adventure:
Some ideas discussed for a Choose Your Own Adventure Web site include the following:
Character
• Four Characters – you pick which character
• Isabella – Ivy League, collegiate
• Tina – Tough, do-it-yourself survivor
• James – the Jock
• Bradley – the nerdy bookworm

Setting
• Library
• Elevator goes crazy and stops on floors between floors. The staircases have vanished. The only way out is the elevator.

Adventures
• The elevator stops on a floor where a party is taking place. The party is from another time period in history and is celebrating a special event from the past – to be determined ex: a party on the Titanic, a Masquerade Ball
• Another elevator stop is a floor of normal looking library bookshelves. Upon further exploration bookshelves form a maze and you must solve riddles or clues to get out of the maze.
• Elevator plummets to the basement where you stumble upon the secret lab of a librarian who is experimenting with something that could change the world, ruin the library, destroy the world – to be determined
• You must put together clues from all your experiences and solve the mystery to stop the librarian’s evil plan.

IV. End of Summer Party
Discussed some activities for the end of summer party which included video games, karaoke or singing bee, improv/whose line is it anyway, pizza, music, and anything to do with iPod.

Next meeting is scheduled for April 28, 2009.
** Teens suggested that we move Teen Voices to the fourth Thursday of each month so that all teen clubs are held on a Thursday with hopes of boosting attendance. Children’s staff is reviewing this request.

February 24, 2009

I. Ice Breaker:
“Who Am I”, by Douglas Rintoul, President

II. Program Ideas:
Super Sentai – Power Rangers
• The group agreed on a program centered around the Japanese version (first seasons) of Power Rangers (Super Sentai)
• Miles is going to see if he can gather some video clips and also compile a history of Power Rangers
• Ice Breaker – Introduce yourself a create Power Range name and “move”.
• Obstacle Course – exact obstacles to be determined
• Craft – Hen shin armband made w/socks or foam
• Power Rangers Video (available at OCLS)
• Scavenger Hunt – hide scrolls in Club Central. Each scroll can contain a clue for the final destination.

• Shelf tilts toward you – trapped under shelf / domino shelves

• Stuck in dark room
• Elevator that goes places it shouldn’t
• Leaky ceiling
• Change light bulb – notice something moving – see small man walking on beam
• Get off elevator and see concert playing in library – each floor has another adventure – things that shouldn’t be there
• Collect clues from each floor to solve a mystery
• Basement – escape out of basement

IV. Marketing
• Facebook – create group and post notes for TLC
• Stickers to hand out at schools and to friends
• Target other volunteer clubs
• Use TLC pool to market Teen Voices to other TLC volunteers
• Morning announcements at High Schools
• Send special invitation to TLC volunteers system wide to attend a brainstorming meeting and get commitments and sign up new members for Teen Voices
• Change date to the 4th Thursday beginning in the Fall.
