Tips for Searching the Library Catalog Tips for Searching the Library Catalog

The Library Catalog looks like this:

From this screen, you can search for your book or video a couple of different ways. In the first blank text box, enter one of these:

Author's Name: Type in the author's last name, and then first name if you know it. If you were looking for a Harry Potter book, you would type in "Rowling, J.K."

Title: Type in the first few words of the title. If the title starts with "A" "An" or "The", use the second word of the title. So, for one of Harry Potter's books, you would enter, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".

Subject or Keyword: Type in the subject or topic that you're looking for. For example, you could type in "wizards" or "Harry Potter" or "magic". If you have more than one topic, you can type in the two words and put "and" in the middle. Your search would look like this "wizards and magic".

Then click on the down arrow in the second box, and choose the kind of search   you just entered in the first box.

 Click on "Go".

Once you've hit "Go", you should see a screen that looks like this:

This is a list of titles that match the search words that you entered. Each record has a number next to it. If you have more than ten matches, then the rest of the results will be on the next page.

Each record will have the author's name, the title of the item, and publishing information (like when the book was written) in the first section.

The bottom part of the record tells you where you can find the item. The first part has the location of the item (for example, at the Main Library or at one of the branches). The next part has the call number, or Dewey Decimal number, of the item. What is a Dewey Decimal? You also look here to find out what format the item is in (could be a book, a CD, a video, or DVD). The last part tells you whether the item is actually at the library or if someone already has it.

If you still can't find what you want, remember you can always get help! You can "Ask a Librarian" or call us at 407.835.7640.
