Talking Books

The Orange County Library System offers the Talking Books program to children and adults in the service area who cannot easily use printed materials, including those who are blind, visually impaired, or unable to use print material due to a physical disability either temporarily or permanently. A talking book is the complete text of a printed book recorded on cassette including mysteries, romances, science fiction, best sellers, children's literature, history, biography, politics and consumer information plus recordings of magazines and The New York Times. Because these recordings play at a slower speed than commercial players, a special cassette machine is provided free for the user. Both the player and the talking books are mailed directly to the patron. Books in Braille are also available through the Talking Books program.

The Orange County Library System provides the service, which is free for the user and includes the delivery and return of machines and materials through the mail. The Florida and the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (Library of Congress), provides the equipment and produce the materials, more than 1,700 talking books each year, for the program. Titles can be selected from catalogs, special book lists and an online catalog.

The Talking Books collection is located on the third floor of the Orlando Public Library. We are happy to arrange for special equipment and/or material needs during any of the Orlando Public Library's regular operating hours. For more information or to receive an application for the Talking Books program please call the Library at 407-835-7464.
The latest enhancement to our Talking Books service is the Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS). This system was funded by a Library Services and Technology Assistance grant.

KLAS is a computerized system accessible through the internet. It enables users to create their own profile including personal preferences such as favorite authors, genres, and subject areas. The KLAS system does allow participants to place their own requests online.
The following link will provide access to search the Talking Books On Line Catalog. If you are participating in the program and would like to obtain a PIN number please call OCLS at 407-835-7464 or the State Regional Library at 1-800-226-6075.
