Collaborations
Central Florida Memory (CFM) started as a pilot project between the University of Central Florida Library, The Orange County Library System and the Orange County Regional History Center. The successful pilot project was awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) 2004 National Leadership Grant for Library-Museum Collaboration, and the partnership has grown to also include the Museum of Seminole County History and the Rollins College Olin Library.
Central Florida Memory was created to provide access to library, museum, historical society, and archival content in Central Florida; produce an ostensive digital resource for scholars, students, teachers, genealogists, residents, visitors, and the general public; assist museums, historical societies, and libraries in digitizing their collections and becoming forums for sharing expertise and technical knowledge, offer a digital archive for those unable to establish their own digital infrastructure, provide a digital resource for K through 12 teachers to bring the region's history into lesson plans, and contribute to the larger body of knowledge of Florida history via access to the CFM Web site through other statewide project sites.
Central Florida Memory comes to life in Second Life
The Orange County Library System created and hosts an exhibit based on the Central Florida Memory
project in the virtual world, Second Life. The exhibit includes a turn of the century homestead complete with cracker house, farm animals, one room school house, an orange grove and more. Visitors to this virtual exhibit can experience an interactive experience that includes walking through the buildings and farm yard as well as touching virtual objects for additional information about Central Florida Memory. The exhibit also includes self paced presentations on examples of digitization projects, getting started on digitization projects, and the types of documents which are found in the Central Florida Memory collections.
